Fox Water was started in 1953 by John Fox in the garage of his North Side Madison home. In the early 1960s, the business was moved into a former Army barracks on Sherman Ave in Madison where it was managed by Richard Mayne.
Ray feels that what sets Fox Water apart from other companies, is its commitment to service and focus on staying local by serving customers located in Dane County."We deal directly with our customers," Mayne said. "We provide good products, good service and good people to deal with. It is what we hang our hat on."Fox Water continues to build its own water softeners because it helps control costs and it gives the company complete control of its product. The water softeners are so reliable, that Fox's one service person, Rich Bernstein, is responsible for 35,000 water softeners and responds to customer issues in one day.
In the early 90s, Richard's son, Ray (shown left) took over the day-to-day management and became a full owner of the business. Since then Ray and long-time employees including his sister, Linda (shown right) have continued to grow the business one customer at a time. They estimate that they have been in over 35,000 homes in Dane County
